Synopsis

THE STORY

THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once.

That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.

After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King.

Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

LA HISTORIA

EL CASCANUECES comienza en la casa de Stahlbaum en la Nochebuena. El Sr. y la Sra. Stahlbaum y sus hijos, Clara y Fritz, están ocupados preparándose para las festividades de la noche. Llegan los invitados, incluido el padrino de Clara, el Dr. Drosselmeyer. El Dr. Drosselmeyer ha creado un regalo especial para Clara, un Cascanueces diseñado en forma de un pequeño soldado. A Clara le encanta su Cascanueces.

Esa noche, Clara no puede dormir sin volver a ver una vez más a su amado Cascanueces. Vuelve de puntillas a la sala y lo toma en sus brazos antes de quedarse dormida. No está segura de si está soñando o no, pero ante sus ojos hay enormes ratones jugando frente al árbol de Navidad que ha crecido a un tamaño enorme. El Cascanueces lucha con el Ratón Rey y, en plena batalla, Clara se quita la zapatilla y la arroja al Ratón Rey. Mientras está distraído, el Cascanueces lo apuñala con su sable.

Después de la batalla, el Cascanueces se transforma mágicamente en un apuesto príncipe y, agradecido a Clara por salvarle la vida, la invita a acompañarlo en un viaje al legendario Reino del Hada Sugar Plum. En el camino, pasan por la exquisita tierra de la Reina y el Rey de Nieve.

El Acto II comienza en la tierra del Hada Sugar Plum, donde Clara se entretiene con una serie de presentaciones, que incluyen bailarinas españolas, árabes, y chinas, así como también a la Madre Buffoon, con sus muchos hijos que aparecen debajo de su falda gigantesca. La noche concluye con el gran pas de deux realizado por el Hada Sugar Plum y su Caballero. Después del pas de deux, Clara es transportada con su príncipe en trineo, mientras se despide del Hada Sugar Plum y su reino mágico.
